Lemon Forecast 2019-2020

The estimated lemon production of 1,110,000 tonnes will allow Spain to continue to be the leading exporter of fresh lemon and consolidate its commercial position in Europe.

The Spanish Association AILIMPO estimates a total lemon crop of 1,110,000 tons for this season 2019-2020, which accounts for a total reduction of 15%. Figures go back to the last decade average after the record crop achieved in the last campaign with 1,300,000 tones.

Regarding the consequences of the flooding in Murcia as a result of the cold drop, AILIMPO has reported no damage for the forecast of lemon production. While damage has occurred in the Vega Baja of Murcia, other lemon-producing areas have been favoured by rainfall, which have also delayed the start of campaign by two weeks.

Varieties

- In regards of Primofiori variety, the season is expected to fully blossom during October, with good quality and good sizes, according to AILIMPO. With an estimated production of 820,000 tonnes, this variety shows a decrease of 11% that will mainly affect the fruit to be harvested in the second part of the season.

- Verna lemon harvest is forecast to a production of 260,000 tonnes, which would mean a reduction of 24% compared to the last season. The reduction is a consequence of the resting of the trees after a record production season. In any case, the production guarantees that the Spanish lemon supply will cover a large part of summer 2020 with good quality fruit.

Regarding competitiveness, AILIMPO expects a good and fair balance of prices and distribution of economic value throughout the chain, while maintaining its position against the aggressive supply of lemon from other competing countries such as Turkey or Egypt.

From a producer perspective, GlobalGAP and GRASP accreditations are still a key factor. The sector’s involvement in sustainable production and the  improvement of  the functioning of the food chain will also be some of the priorities for this season.
